Virtual Music Activities
Hey Lincoln Lions!
Just because we are currently not in school doesn't mean we can't still have some musical fun!
For this week's Music activity, we'll be taking a trip back in time!!! Don't get too excited... only back a few weeks! On Tuesday, March 17, the world celebrated St. Patrick's Day! I had planned a fun activity to learn a little more about this holiday, but didn't get to share it due to our not being in session. So, let's do it now!
St. Patrick's Day was originally established in honor of St. Patrick. St. Patrick was often celebrated for bringing Christianity to the country of Ireland. While many around the world still celebrate St. Patrick's day for this reason, most take part in St. Patrick's day as a celebration of Irish Culture.
So, in honor of St. Patrick as well as Ireland, let's learn a little about a great Irish tradition!

So, in honor of St. Patrick as well as Ireland, let's learn a little about a great Irish tradition!
- Learning Goal: I can develop and perform my own Irish step dance SO THAT I can better appreciate and understand Irish culture!
Irish Step Dance- Let’s learn about Irish Step Dancing! Step dancing is a form of dance that focuses on highlighting intricate footwork patterns. Watch traditional Irish Step Dancing.
- QUESTIONS AFTER THE VIDEO?:
- How often do you see the dancers using their hands?
- Why do you think that is? How is Irish step dancing similar to typical dancing you see at parties here in America? How is Irish step dancing different from dancing you see at parties here in America?
- Is the step dance for boys, girls, or both?
- What instruments are being played in the background?
- An Irish Jig is a step dance that is often performed in the country of Ireland.
- Watch how to perform a traditional Irish Jig.
- LET’S CREATE OUR OWN!
- Step 1 - Select two dance moves you like from the video. Practice those!
- Step 2 - Create two step dance moves on your own. You may only use your feet! NO arm movements!
- Step 3 - Put all 4 dance moves together to create your own dance!
- Tip for Practice - Each dance movement should last for 16 beats of music. Count to 16 each time you perform a dance move! When you have performed all 4 dance movements, just repeat the dance! :)
- Try it with MUSIC! The fiddle player plays 4 beats of music, then the song begins. Do not start dancing until after the first 4 beats of music. “1, 2, 3, 4, DANCE!”
- ENJOY!
If a parent or guardian says it is "Ok," take a photo or video of yourself performing the Irish step dance and tweet it out! Be sure to tag the Lincoln Music Classroom @musical_lions !
